Preservation projects are vital for maintaining both Greater Portland’s sense of place and its economic and social vibrancy. We celebrate outstanding contributions to preservation through our awards program.

Awards are granted in the following categories. Please note, some categories may have more than one award recipient, and others may have none in a given award cycle as we strive to recognize and celebrate the best preservation efforts across Greater Portland. 

  • Individual contributions to preservation in Greater Portland - This award is granted to a group or person who has made considerable progress in preservation efforts in the Greater Portland area, whether through policy work, stewardship, advocacy efforts, educational efforts, or a history of preservation-minded construction projects.

  • Rehabilitation project - This award is granted to projects large and small that admirably demonstrate the revitalization and/or reactivation of an existing historic structure. 

  • New construction - This award is granted to a new infill construction project that is contextually appropriate to the neighborhood. Projects for consideration must have been completed in the last five years. 

  • Individual homeowner preservation efforts - This award is granted to a homeowner for their efforts to preserve and maintain their historic home using best practices.

  • Public spaces - This award is granted to an organization that has undertaken efforts toward preservation, accessibility, and revitalization of a park or landscape that is open and free of charge to all and contributes to Greater Portland’s sense of place.

  • Neighborhood revitalization - This award is granted to a group or individual for their work in community revitalization and community building efforts that seek to preserve a sense of place.

  • Policy project/effort - This award is granted to an individual or group who worked to enact preservation- or sustainability-related policies to the benefit of Greater Portland. 

  • Outstanding tradesperson/company - This award is granted to a tradesperson or company that has shown dedicated commitment to preservation efforts, expanding access and education to traditional trades, and exceptional craftsmanship in their work in Greater Portland.

  • Storytelling - This award is granted to a person, group, or project that widens our understanding of Greater Portland’s history through academic or artistic means.
